Data Centre Locations

EDC's Sydney data centre located at Norwest, outside the 15km CBD Radius of Risk, showing easy access to all locations via Sydney Orbital Link

The most resilient data centres or business continuity centres are of little value if located within the CBD 15km Radius of Risk.

Lessons learned from world events have proven the need for due diligence and compliance when choosing the right location to house your critical IT data processing or disaster recovery solution.

Checklist for choosing the right data centre location:

Proximity risks – site must be more than 15km outside known danger zones (i.e. high density tall buildings, known danger zones, CBD radius of risk) to avoid common outages and congestion.

Network risks – site must not be reliant on CBD network grid but still have clear line of sight to major locations for communications links.

Access risks – site must have access to multiple transportation corridors should a CBD disaster affect public transport.  Site needs to be away from risk of traffic congestion or police barricades affecting nearby buildings and potential terrorist threats.

Car parking access risks – site must have easy access to ample car parking should there be a regional disaster with security car parking for staff working 24x7 for production or recovery.

Geographic risks – site must be located on high ground to remove risk of flooding.  The data centre must be on different geological foundations to CBD ensuring no geological common fault lines to remove the risk of single points of failure that may be geologically induced.
